Jarenlang werd JM Keynes door economen beschouwd als de belangrijkste denker uit hun midden. In een recent boek van Robert Solow over Joseph Schumpeter: Prophet of Innovation: Joseph Schumpeter and Creative Destruction, toont Solow aan dat de belangrijkste man toch echt Schumpeter is. Schumpeter is vooral bekend als de bedenker van ' waves of innovation' (zie figuur, ontleend aan The Economist's survey "Innovation in Industry" 20/2/1999):



Zijn ideeën over innovatie en entrepreneurs waren toen (in 1911) en nu nog steeds even valide:

Without innovation, no entrepreneurs; without entrepreneurial achievement, no capitalist returns and no capitalist propulsion. The atmosphere of industrial revolutions—of 'progress'—is the only one in which capitalism can survive.

Zoals Solow aangeeft over Schumpeter:

"He was explicit that, while technological innovation was in the long run the most important function of the entrepreneur, organizational innovation in governance, finance and management was comparable in significance."

Nogmaals: innovatie is niet (alleen maar ) R&D/technolgie, maar ook organisatie-, proces-, financiële en management-innovatie. Zie ook mijn eerdere blog.
